"I’m really proud that within 12 months of establishing the Ally Network the University is participating in the Mardi Gras Parade and I think the network will achieve amazing things over the coming years.”

Say hi to our star of the University’s Mardi Gras parade float – the fabulous Jacky Randa, sometimes known as Mark Smith, Executive Officer to Senate.

Five minutes with Jacky Randa

What are the highlights and challenges of your role?

Jacky: As the University Ambassador to the LGBTIQ community there are so many highlights. I love going out into the University community and doing good works. Of course the biggest challenge is deciding what to wear every day. I’ve told Micky (Spence) and Sara (Watts) if they expect me to be the University Ambassador I need a separate shoes and handbag budget.

What does Mardi Gras mean to you and why is it important for the University to be involved?

Jacky: Sweetie, Mardi Gras is my life. I spend all year coming up with exciting ideas for the parade and selling those ideas around town. Unfortunately due to a wardrobe malfunction at a Sydney City Council event (the Lord Mayor and I were wearing the same pants suit, of course I was wearing it better), a lovely friend of mine mentioned that the University might be a better fit for my style, and lo and behold here I am!!

Jacky – what will you be wearing at Mardi Gras and who are your style inspirations?

Jacky: Darling, if I told you I would have to kill you – it must remain a surprise. But needless to say when the University asked me to be University Ambassador to the LGBTIQ community and Mardi Gras the first thing I did was call my good friend and godmother Donatella (Versace), and told her to get out the Singer and the sequins and start getting creative.

Who inspires you?

Jacky: Sweetie, I am the inspiration! So many people – staff, students, Quad tourists – always come up to me telling me how much I inspire them and how they want to be like me. Of course, I am not surprised.

If you could give your 18-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Jacky: A big smile and a pair of stilettos can get you out of any tricky situation.

You can come and get a sneak peak at the float during OWeek. Find us at the front of the Quad and add your own touch!
