Student DJs raise $5K for charity and play Sandstorm on the Carillon
Last week, student radio group SURG hosted their ambitious 25-hour charity broadcast to raise money for the national youth mental health foundation, Headspace. They kicked it off in the most epic way imaginable, by joining Carillonist Amy Johansen in the Clocktower to perform Darude’s 1999 techno anthem ‘Sandstorm’ on the famous Carillon bells. They spent the next 25 sleepless hours bunkered in their tent in JFR, finding interesting ways to entertain their loyal listeners (for instance shaving their own eyebrows for donations). The fun was all in the name of charity, and in the end they raised more than $4600 for Headspace.
Sydney rowers ready for Australian Boat Race
Glory is on the line when our champion rowers make the trip into enemy territory to take on the University of Melbourne on the Yarra River for the 2015 Australian Boat Race, this Sunday 25 October. The hallowed Edmund Barton trophy has been in our possession since our men’s eights took victory on home waters, but Melbourne’s men are hungry for revenge. Our women’s eights are also aiming to peg one back against their interstate foes after defeat in 2014. If you can’t make it to the Yarra, you can watch the action via a live stream. We’ll also be covering the race on Twitter (via #ausboatrace). Be sure to wish our students good luck!
Libraries launch ‘novel’ innovation
Students using the libraries in Camden at Bosch can now snack on a selection of high-rotation titles from the library's collections with new book vending machines – the first of their kind in NSW. The new machines allow easy access to high-demand books and open up more room for learning spaces.
