Happy O-Week
Happy O-Week.  I hope everyone is feeling an appropriate mixture of calm preparation and restless anticipation for the beginning of a new teaching year.

Two administrative reminders from your FASS UG committee representative:

What this means is that all turn it in assignments and submitted written work should be on student ID rather than name.  There has been a lot of debate about this new regulation.  Regardless of personal opinion, it’s important (I think) to note that this this policy has been initiated and driven 100% by students.  Beyond the ‘mandatory’ policy, I would ask that we demonstrate respect for their request, and the concerns that initiated it, by complying wherever possible.

FASS will be holding an Anonymous Marking forum on Friday 9 March from 1-2pm. We have invited Professor Tony Masters, Professor Adam Bridgeman, Dr Amani Bell and SRC rep to sit on a panel. The session will be led by Associate Dean (Education), Associate Professor Alyson Simpson.  You can register through the FASS newsletter sent last week or by contacting Tanya Doulaveras

2. Late penalties for assignments have changed slightly
 
Last year FASS Faculty Board voted for the following faculty wide policy on late assignments: 5% per calendar day (weekends included) for up to 10 days.  The core changes for us are that weekends are now included and that students can be 10 days late before they receive a 0. 

Please note this faculty-wide policy is only for work that is allocated a grade – not criterion graded work that receive SR or F.  In these instances, students who are more than 5 calendar days late with work and have not applied for an extension will receive a fail grade.

Postgraduate Scholarships in Educational Psychology and/or Educational Assessment & Measurement

Exciting opportunities exist for up to six talented and motivated candidates to undertake PhD projects within an energetic environment led by skilled supervisors who have won supervision awards.

These will be related to STEM motivation and/or assessment & measurement in education-related settings. Professor Tognolini is Director of the Educational Measurement and Assessment Hub; Professor Watt heads the MOVE icp (Motivation, Engagement and Individual Choice Pathways) Research Network. Selected candidates will develop sophisticated research skills through involvement with survey instruments, data management and coding, data analyses, and report writing.

The 2018 Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Teaching Fellowships have been awarded to an outstanding group of PhD students from across the faculty. In the School of Education and Social Work fellowships were awarded to: Claire Golledge (Education), Rachel O’Brien (Education) and Lobna Yassine (Social Work).

The Teaching Fellowships are awarded to successful candidates in the final year of their PhD who can provide strong endorsement from their department or school for their research excellence, evidence of their capacity to be integrated into the school's teaching program as a developmental process and confirmation from their supervisor that they can balance thesis submission with Fellowship teaching duties.
 
The Teaching Fellows commence their positions in February and the appointments are held for the academic year.

Incident/hazard notification When your staff report an incident, injury or hazard in RiskWare you will automatically receive an email notification. This email provides summary details of the incident or hazard, instructions on what you need to do next and a direct link to the record in RiskWare. Click on the link in the email to view the details of the incident or hazard. From here you can complete a corrective action plan.

Alternatively, you can log on to RiskWare at any time, click on the “Incident Register” icon and then look in the Assigned Incident/Hazard tab. From here you can choose to either View Details or enter a Corrective Action Plan.

Corrective action plans Corrective action plans are used to record the actions that have or will be taken in response to an incident or a reported hazard.

This masterclass is an opportunity for doctoral students to present their work and get feedback from a supportive group of peers and from Dr Jen Ross, a visiting researcher from the Centre for Research in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh. Jen’s research focuses on critical perspectives on digital education in higher education and museum and gallery settings, and she has recently published on topics including speculative methods, mobilities, evaluating learning and engagement in cultural heritage settings, student experiences of dissertations at a distance, digital futures an ‘not-yetness’, open education, and MOOCs. She currently supervises doctoral work on topics including critical information literacy, participatory design, place-responsive education at a distance, the role of social media in language learning investment, sonic and multimodal analysis of higher education settings, and cultural meanings of MOOCs in Saudi Arabia. To participate as a presenter: submit a two-page summary of your current work in progress and a summary of what you want to discuss by 10am on Monday March 12th to sadhbh.warren@sydney.edu.au. Up to three proposals will be selected for presentation on the day. On the 22nd, those selected will have 15 minutes to present their work, which will be followed by 15 minutes of discussion and feedback from Jen and the group. The session will end with some discussion about the value of critical and future-facing research approaches in our field.
 
Everyone is welcome to attend on the day to hear presentations and give feedback, registration is not required. This masterclass will give you a chance to hear how others talk about their research, practice giving constructive feedback, and produce generative new connections and ways of thinking about digital education research.

In this talk, senior lecturer from the University of Edinburgh Dr Jen Ross will draw from David Lyon’s recent work on surveillance culture, and put this in the context of established and emerging technology-related developments in higher education. Using examples including biometric attendance monitoring and algorithmic plagiarism detection, Dr Ross will explore how teachers’ active participation in “attempt[ing] to regulate their own surveillance and the surveillance of others” (Lyon 2017, p.824) is changing the nature of relationships between students and teachers.

Join us on March 13th for a special seminar when our two speakers from Arizona State University will present on the EdPlus Action Lab, a dedicated digital teaching and learning laboratory.

Intro of the Action Lab

The Action Lab, a dedicated digital teaching and learning laboratory within Arizona State University’s EdPlus, engages in deep learning analytics, providing continuous program improvement ultimately resulting in student success. Drawing from ASU's digital learning leadership position and world class research capacity in cognitive science, adaptive learning and social science, the Action Lab translates data into practical classroom applications to improve student outcomes at scale. Our mission is to make technology-enabled education research useful for systemic, scalable and radical advancement in digital teaching and learning, and our research focus includes the efficacy of online education in traditional degree-granting programs, open scale courses, and adaptive/emerging technology.

Non-Cognitive Assessments for ASU Online Learners

The availability of large-scale online courses enabled assessment of academic performances at scale. Equally important is the opportunity to investigate the state of non-cognitive or soft skills of online learners to inform design of interventions to improve learning outcomes. The present analysis looked learners who successfully passed the course, either passed at their first attempts or passed after failed attempts, and compared how their soft skills differ from the rest of learners. The findings suggested that 1) Learners who successfully passed the course tend to have strong skill sets related to time and project management; 2) Learners who successfully passed the course after failed attempts tend to have higher skill sets related to decision making and leadership.

Presenters:  Elle Yuan Wang is a Research Scientist at ASU EdPlus Action Lab. Her current projects center on assessing social and emotional leaning skillsets and predicting learner longitudinal career development in large-scale online learning environments.

Tom Fikes is Director of Research as ASU’s EdPlus Action lab, a dedicated laboratory for the study of digital teaching and learning. His academic interests include experimental, statistical, and modeling methods in general and in application to educational data in the digital domain in particular, as well as experimental economic games and the evolution of cooperation.
International Conference on Computers in Education seeks PC members to review 2/3 papers
Former faculty member Kate Thompson is looking for PC members to review 2/3 papers for the International Conference on Computers in Education (ICCE 2018) to be held at Bayanihan Center in Manila, Philippines on November 26-30, 2018. This involves reviewing no more than 2-3 papers in June/July this year. Led by Directors of Research Development, Associate Professors Lee Wallace and Susan Goodwin, and Business Development Manager, Kate Taylor, the program consists of three half-day workshops. It is limited to 12 participants.
 
Participants attending all three workshops will be eligible to apply for competitively awarded seed funding to develop a relationship with an external partner who has indicated interest. 
 
Those interested in applying for the Accelerator should have an external partner in mind and ideally an identified contact person within the organization.
 
The third workshop will involve three-minute pitches from participants to a jury of internal and external experts with ARC Linkage experience.

Description The HDR journey can feel like a blur of juggling your research, work commitments, publications, and conferences as you attempt to do everything you can for that elusive academic job when you finish. So, how you make sure you are competitive and stand out?

Universities want to know about your IMPACT. How far reaching is your research? How well known are you professionally? How wide are your networks? What have you published? How significant has this been?

Sound overwhelming? It can be!!!

This workshop is designed to help HDR students enhance their discoverability and increase their impact in the online academic world through simple management of online academic profiles.

This Workshop will enable you to:
  • Set up a small number of key online profiles and learn how to maintain them.
  • Appreciate the value of an ORCID identifier for academics especially about their publications, grants, and citations.
  • Learn how to populate, link, and where possible integrate these key online profiles to possibly raise citation rates and awareness of one’s academic work.
Value of this Workshop:
  • Control your professional image online, including correcting errors and improve the dissemination of your work.
  • You and your work must be available, accessible, and findable; this workshop will help with all three.
  • By controlling and linking your work, you will make it easier to find, and therefore potentially easier to make a difference, prove value, and increase citations.
  • Become more aware of useful methods for early career researchers to promote their work and for mid-late career researchers to curate and distribute their work.
  • Time for personal reflection on your story and track record as an academic.
There are a very limited number of spaces available for this event, so be quick! Students who register are committing to sharing what they learn with at least one other HDR student in their faculty/department. This is essential so this valuable information can be shared throughout the HDR cohort at the University.

The guidelines  for the Research and Travel Support Scheme (RTSS) were outlined at last years School Meeting and are now attached for your information.

Reporting your publications
A reminder to academic and honorary staff and HDR students that details of your new publications should be sent to Camilla Pilgrim for entry into the University’s IRMA database.

Academic staff and HDR students, once your publications are in IRMA they will automatically display on your profile. Please check your profiles to see if any publications are missing.

Honorary staff, publications will be added to IRMA and to your honorary profile.
 
The University’s central Research Support are currently verifying and assessing 2017 research publications. ERA eligible publications are:
 
Traditional research output types:
 
● books - authored research
● chapters in research books - authored research
● journal articles - scholarly, peer reviewed
● conference publications - full paper refereed, published in full

Non-traditional research outputs:
  • ● creative works – must have a research statement, detailing the research contribution and significance etc.
  • ● commissioned/solicited research reports for external bodies - published/publicly available
 Please provide a DOI or link to the journal article online and a link to online conference proceedings where available.

All ERA eligible publications go through a verification and assessment process by the University to ensure they meet the ERA definition of research. Publications which are not eligible – e.g. edited books, articles in professional magazines, edited journals etc. – can also be added to IRMA so they display on your profile.

eLearning 'Brown Bag' sessions | Canvas
As academic colleagues return for Semester 1, many will be using Canvas for the first time in a teaching and learning setting.

Where colleagues have returned to partially completed Canvas sites, we’re encouraging them to get back in touch with the central Educational Design team to finish the site (via canvas.transition@sydney.edu.au).

We have scheduled a large number of activities to support both Canvas and Blackboard users in Semester 1, but I want to draw your attention to our eLearning 'Brown Bag' sessions.
 
Taking place on Thursdays, 12-1pm in 322 Brennan any (and all) queries about eLearning (Blackboard, quizzes, drop-boxes, Canvas, Grade Centre/Gradebook) are welcome.

Transition to Canvas – timeline and support for Phase 2
As we head into Semester 1, the Educational Innovation team are now focusing on Phase 2 of the transition to Canvas.  Please note below the priorities for Canvas for Phase 2.

Who does this affect?
Our priority is 1000 level and postgraduate units of study taught in Winter School, Semester 2 and intensives that occur during this period.

Phase 1

UOS prioritisation:
Summer School, Semester 1 and intensives: 1000 level and postgraduate
Contact period:  11 Sep-9 Feb

Phase 2
UOS prioritisation:
1000 level and postgraduate for Winter School, Semester 2 and intensives during this period.
2000, 3000 and 4000 level units when possible.
Contact period: 12 Feb – 13 July

Phase 3
UOS prioritisation:
Remaining 2000, 3000 and 4000 level units taught in 2018
Contact period: 16 July – 30 Oct

Any other units and non-unit of study sites that need to be migrated from Blackboard.

What support will you receive?

If your unit falls into Phase 2:
  • an educational designer will arrange a 1-hour design meeting with you to go through the design and build of your Canvas site
  • based on the outcomes of the design meeting, the transition team will complete your site and you will be contacted typically 4 weeks later to review it.
  • The site will then be released back to you for ongoing development utilising normal processes and support
  • You also have access to skills workshopsCanvas design articlesopen Canvas sitestools and guides, and the Educational Innovation Yammer group.
 How to prepare for a design meeting?
There are a few ways you can start thinking about the design of your unit of study in Canvas:
 Want to build your own Canvas site?
If you would like to design and build your own Canvas site, attend a skills workshop and use the 24/7 Canvas Support Hotline for just in time support. Contact the hotline through ICT (ext: 12000 option 2 then option 3) or live chat available from the left-hand menu in your Canvas site. The transition team can review your site and provide feedback before it is made available to students.

As an offshoot of the Critical Theory Reading Group we will be holding the first meeting of the Holme Courtyard Cafe Writing Group on Friday March 9, 10-11AM. Please bring a piece of writing that you would like to work on ( for example a conference abstract, article or lecture  outline, grant application, ethics application, section of a journal article of book chapter.
