‘Education Matters’, a lecture by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
Compass partner high schools are invited to select thirteen Year 11 or 12 students with a keen interest in ethics and morality to attend a very special event with His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Date: Thursday 13 June 2013 (please note change of date)
Arrival Time: 8.30 - 9.00 AM
Event Time: 9.15-10.30AM
Departure: 11.00AM
Venue: York Theatre, Seymour Centre, Corner of City Road and Cleveland St, Sydney NSW 2008
  • Four questions will be chosen to be asked from the entire audience, and we would like one of them to be from your students! 
  • Therefore, we're asking each school to submit one question which will be judged by the Compass team. The winning school will need to provide one student to ask the question directly to His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the event. 
THEME: 
Education Matters (Or Does It?)
What is the purpose and value of education? And why does it matter to so many young people worldwide?

  • Each student’s name MUST be individually entered due to the high level of security associated with this special guest. 
  • Teachers, please use your school email address, not students'. 
  • Tickets will be distributed a week prior to the event.

Schools invited to collaborate on indigenous programs
Minister for Higher Education announces new funding
 On 30 April 2013, Minister for Higher Education Sharon Bird announced a new funding source for universities under the Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP).
The University of Sydney is eligible to bid for resources from the $50 million fund.  The Social Inclusion Unit welcomes suggestions from our partner schools for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student - focused projects that aim to improve access to higher education and school completion.

Andrew Upton reception and keynote address on The Arts in Education
The Faculty of Education and Social Work invites you to a reception and the keynote address by this year’s Artist-in-Residence.

ANDREW UPTON will stake the territory of the residency and its importance in the Faculty’s work in the arts in education. Increasingly, research shows that the role of the creative in arts in education greatly affects participation rates and augments overall educational outcomes. Upton’s work as both a creative and an educational facilitator will be explored and investigated. The event will be followed by an audience Q&A.

As a Compass partner, you can access a Professional Learning fund for your school, which can be used to cover the course fees for workshops from the Office of Professional Learning at the Faculty of Education and Social Work.  You can see the 2013 Professional Learning calendar here to find out what workshops are available this year.  

National Curriculum sessions: 
  • Discuss how what you do now translates across to the new curriculum and vice versa.  The presenters for these sessions have been involved in the steering parties for the new curriculum and/or have worked with schools in the testing phases.  
  • Small groups (maximum of 35) so that participants can ask questions about the direct effects to their work in the classroom.
  • New information on national curriculum sessions for English and Mathematics.
