Year 9 STEM Day
Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Day

The first Compass Day of Inquiry (STEM) is taking place on Tuesday 4th December.  The day will run from 10am until 2.30pm at the University of Sydney.

This day is for 30 Year 9 students from each Compass partner school.  Students will visit the University campus to take part in extended workshops (2.5 hours) around a central theme (energy and sustainability).  The students will explore elements of Science, Maths, Engineering and Design through a hands-on inquiry, as they work with staff and students from across the University to work out how we can design sustainable power grids, buildings, and more.

By showing students how the STEM subjects operate in the world outside the classroom, the day will help encourage them to further engage in these subjects.

Please contact Sophie Partridge for more information.

"I DREAM" ART COMPETITION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Event image 7520
As we told Compass Coordinators about last week, the Sydney Law School is running an art competition for children and young people under 18 years who have experienced loss, disability or displacement.
(As entries close on November 16, we recommended that visual arts teachers approach students with near-completed work that might be eligible - unless the students are very fast workers!)
Winners will receive a cash prize and be showcased at the Conference on 29 and 30 November 2012.

INTENSE WEATHER FOR IECS CAMPUS VISIT
Event image 7548
On Friday, 9 November the University hosted the final Year 7 campus visit of 2012 with junior school students from Kogarah and Marrickville Intensive English Centres. The plan had been to introduce the students to the very Australian sport of Aussie Rules football with the Sports Union, but due to dire weather forecasts of storms, a change of plan saw the group head downstairs to the Nicholson Museum to handle thousand-year-old artefacts instead.
On Friday, 9 November the University hosted the final Year 7 campus visit of 2012 with junior school students from Kogarah and Marrickville Intensive English Centres. Compass staff and student ambassadors had to use all their energy to keep up with the lively students, some of whom had been at the IEC for several months, and some of whom had only just arrived in Australia. The plan had been to introduce the students to the very Australian sport of Aussie Rules football with the Sports Union, but due to dire weather forecasts of storms, a change of plan saw the group head downstairs to the Nicholson Museum to handle thousand-year-old artefacts instead. As it turned out, the sun held on for most of the campus visit, but was eventually overwhelmed by black clouds and pouring rain - just as the buses were leaving! We thank the IEC students and staff for their enthusiasm, and look forward to seeing them again for Compass Showcase on November 24.
