2014 Equity Fellowships announced
The recipients of the 2014 University of Sydney Equity Fellowships have been announced, with eight extraordinary academics being celebrated at a ceremony with Professor Jill Trewhella, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).

The recipients of the 2014 University of Sydney Equity Fellowships have been announced, with eight extraordinary academics being celebrated at a ceremony with Professor Jill Trewhella, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).

A number of diverse research areas will benefit from the fellowships, from neuroscience to art history, as well as mathematics and mathematics education, ancient history, psychology, pharmacology, and chemistry.

Dr Janette Bobis, a 2014 Equity Fellow from the Faculty of Education and Social Work was quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald this week, in an article addressing maths teaching in our education system.

The Equity Fellowships, a joint initiative between the DVC(R) and the Equity and Diversity Strategy Centre are designed to promote equity and diversity at the University of Sydney.

Are you planning to apply for Cancer Council NSW Project Grant funding for the next round in 2015? Cancer Council NSW is conducting a workshop on campus to help you increase your chances of being funded.

When: Monday 4 November, 3pm-4:30pm
Where: Norman Gregg Lecture Theatre, Edward Ford Building

The workshop will:

  • explain the grant assessment process in detail and the integral role of consumers in it
  • discuss how you can effectively make the best use of consumers in your research
  • describe how to complete the Consumer Review Form to increase your chances of success
  • have a substantial Q&A session (so bring your questions!)

Henry Halloran Trust
The University of Sydney, through the generous gift of Warren Halloran, has established the Henry Halloran Trust to promote scholarship, innovation and research in town planning, urban development and land management.

The University of Sydney, through the generous gift of Warren Halloran, has established the Henry Halloran Trust to promote scholarship, innovation and research in town planning, urban development and land management.

This will be achieved through collaborative, cross-disciplinary and industry research that will support innovative approaches to urban and regional policy, planning and development issues.

The trust is in honour of Henry Halloran, who was an active advocate for town planning in the first half of the twentieth century.

The initial funding round of the Trust is now open. Two types of project funding are available:
  • Strategic partnership grants are grants where the Trust shares research funding in conjunction with other funders/organisations
  • Blue Sky project grants will promote explorations and research into innovative ideas and concepts that focus on the interactions between the environment, technology and community which stimulate new ideas/practices about land use and settlement design.

Discourse in PhD examiners' reports
Two University of Sydney academics and a guest lecturer are presenting their paper, Evaluation and instruction in PhD examiners' reports: a discourse perspective, which aims to draw awareness to the ambiguous language used in PhD examiners' reports.

Where: Room 306, Old Teachers College (A22)
Two University of Sydney academics and a guest lecturer are presenting their paper, Evaluation and instruction in PhD examiners' reports: a discourse perspective, which examines the discourses of evaluation and instruction in 142 PhD examiners’ reports on theses submitted at a university in New Zealand.

They hope to draw to raise examiners’ awareness of the implications of the language they use when writing their reports as well as draw thesis supervisor and institutional attention to the ambiguities inherent in this underexplored genre.

The University of Sydney is holding a memorial service for Marjorie Jacobs (BA ’36 MA ’42), emeritus professor of history at the University of Sydney, on Wednesday 27 November.

Her career at the university spanned four decades (1938 to 1980) and covered a range of research interests and achievements, which are outlined in her obituary.
