RESEARCH PORTFOLIO RESTRUCTURE

On 8 October the Research Portfolio implemented a realigned structure that will enable the Portfolio to:
  • continue improvements to services we provide researchers;
  • expand our capacity to support collaborative and multi-disciplinary research and
  • take a more active role in shaping the research environment outside the University so it better supports our research.
Find out more about the changes and how they might affect you at the Research Support website.

NHMRC travel costs advice
The NHMRC has provided advice for grant-holders on the use of grant funds for travel, conference and publication costs.
The NHMRC has provided advice for grant-holders on the use of grant funds for travel, conference and publication costs.

As travel can not always be predicted in the course of a research project, the cost of conference attendance and publications can't be included in the direct research costs in application budgets. When travel is integral to undertaking the research project such as field work, research collaboration or use of facilities in other countries this should be included in the application.

The NHMRC is allowing travel and conference costs to be acquitted as direct research costs if directly related to the approved research objectives and attendance at the conference is to present outcomes of the funded research.

The NHMRC will cover one overseas trip per year per grant for a single investigator and reasonable domestic travel.  All overseas travel must be approved prior to travel.

For your overseas travel you will need to submit an application for approval to the Research Portfolio. For more information about how to do this please contact Yamini Sandiran.

To read the full advice from the NHMRC visit the NHMRC website.

Share your ideas for the health and medical research review
As the review begins to take shape, we are asking for your input. What do you consider are the key issues the review should address?
In the context of recent state and federal government reports, we now have an unprecedented opportunity to shape our vision for health and medical research through the recently announced Wills Review, which will focus on optimising the resources of all our health and medical research entities over the next 10 years.

As the review begins to take shape, we are asking for your input. What do you consider are the key issues that the review should address?  Through our critical partnerships in the health system, we have, as an institution, deep insight into the challenges and opportunities facing our communities and the world. Whether you are directly involved in research, teaching or delivering services, or indirectly involved through activities such as design and urban infrastructure planning, your knowledge of the issues faced will be valuable.

A simple web form has been developed to capture your responses, which will provide the foundation for a discussion paper.

To help shape our vision so that we may continue to lead in the delivery of better health outcomes, you are urged to contribute your ideas.

Expressions of interest for the Sydney Research Networks Scheme (SyReNS) are now open. SyReNS provides funding and other support for themed research groups or networks spanning multiple Faculties over a two year period.

Ideally SyReNS funding will lead to a substantial, sustainable, externally-funded program into the future i.e. at least in some instances, it would be seed funding to develop a major application for a Centre or the like.

Recipients last year included:

Sir Zelman Cowen Universities Fund Academic Exchange Fellowships
Applications are now open for these Fellowships that support visits by postdoctoral fellows and academic staff of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to the University of Sydney.
Offered twice annually, applications are now open for these Fellowships that support visits by postdoctoral fellows and academic staff of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to the University of Sydney.

The University of Sydney and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have in place an agreement to encourage mutual visits by academic staff.

Applications for support are invited from all disciplines and will be ranked on academic merit. Preference will be given to projects in the area of Semitic Studies. It is expected that the visits will have a specific academic purpose and that their duration will not exceed 2 semesters. Shorter visits are encouraged. Support will normally include a return economy airfare and some contribution to living expenses.

Closing date for applications is Friday 16 November 2012.
