Compass Directions has a new format for 2012, with a few features we hope you find useful:
- A Contents menu in the top left for quick reference - just click on the item you want to jump to
- A 'teaser' format for longer stories that allows you to 'Read more' if you're interested in the story, or save it for later if you don't have time.
- More space for pictures
- Hyperlinks to email addresses and websites remain in the new format.

Dr Michael Ungar, ‘Resilience in the Middle Years’
Michael Ungar is a University Research Professor and Professor at the School of Social Work at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. As the Director of the Resilience Research Centre, he currently leads a number of studies of resilience involving researchers from more than a dozen countries on six continents.
He is also the author of eight books including:
- Strengths-Based Counseling with At-Risk Youth
- We Generation: Raising Socially Responsible Kids
- Playing at Being Bad: The Hidden Resilience of Troubled Teens, and
- Too Safe for Their Own Good: How Risk and Responsibility Help Teens Thrive.

| NEW VOLUNTEERS COMING TO YOUR SCHOOLS THIS YEAR |

O-Week 2012 was a tale of extreme weather and extreme enthusiasm. To spread the word about our volunteer programs, Compass staff braved three days of frequent drenching rain, searing sun and muggy air at our O-Week stall on Eastern Avenue. Fuelled by Fantales, Mentos and sheer chutzpah, we chatted to students and staff about how they could make a difference in our school communities through the Compass Word Up, Homework Club and Classroom Activity Facilitators programs.
Compass Volunteers have been working with twelve of our primary and high school partners to encourage reading and literacy development through our Word Up program since 2010. Volunteers also work as Classroom Activity Facilitators, delivering classroom lessons in primary schools as part of the 3-Phase programs. This work is set to continue with a new bunch of volunteers currently being recruited and plenty of last year's volunteers ready for action in 2012.

The volunteers' valuable work would not be possible without the supervision, support and commitment of the coordinating teachers at our partner schools. The warm and responsive atmosphere the volunteers encounter when in the schools is essential for their continued development, and we are greatly appreciative of the work you do.

We’re pleased to report that over one hundred parents and students are planning to attend our first Parents Campus Visit for 2012! These families will be spending what we hope is a sunny Sunday touring the campus, sampling the University’s range of programs, and imagining what their kids might be able to do at university in the future. | NEW RESOURCES FOR CAREERS ADVISERS |

The Student Recruitment Unit at the University has just launched a new website which Careers Advisers might find useful.
In particular, the 'Talk To Our Students' pages feature brief interviews with students from a variety of backgrounds who've all taken different paths to university.
- The students give real-life advice about scholarships, degree choice, HSC support, specific programs and successful study that your students will find engaging and helpful.
- Your students can ask the Uni students questions via email for even more detailed information.
