What’s new in teaching and learning
|
 |
This year you’ll have more world-class facilities to study, learn and relax in, and more online and mobile ways to engage with your course material.
This year we’ll have more world-class facilities to study, learn and relax in, and more online and mobile ways to engage with your studies.
As the 2012 academic year kicks off, we're opening new Learning Hubs, including a refurbished space in Fisher Library, that will allow you to work when and how you want. Keep an eye on At Sydney in coming weeks to find out more. We're also improving your online learning environments, with the introduction of a virtual desktop system that makes it easier to work on different computers around campus, and an app that will allow you to access Blackboard material on your mobile or tablet. Of course, good education is not just about where you learn – it's about who you learn with. You’ll meet some outstanding teachers during your time here, and we’re very proud that student satisfaction with teaching rose to its highest level in 2011 since we started running surveys in 1999 – so make the most of it!

Celebrate International Women’s Day 2012 at this inspiring presentation.Celebrate International Women’s Day 2012 at this inspiring presentation.
Marian Baird (Professor of Employment Relations in the Business School, and Director of the Women and Work Research Group) presents “Blue stockings, babies and bank balances: the promise and perversities of new work and women policies”. Professor Baird will canvass the issues of female identity, education and reproduction – and the implication for women’s income security over the course of life. In the context of the suite of policies that are being introduced in Australia, she suggests that while new policies promise a brighter future, there is also the possibility they will deliver unintended outcomes. Find out more about International Women’s Day on the web. Explore significant discoveries in Botticelli’s use of materials and technique with a leading renaissance art curator and museum director at this Sydney Ideas lecture.
During the 19th century Botticelli was rediscovered in Italy and England. In Italy this happened not only because of the extraordinary beauty of his painting, but also because it could represent a kind of national art in which recently united Italians could identify themselves. Among Botticelli’s admirers was Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli. His significant art collection was left to the public, becoming the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan. The current director of the museum, Dr Annalisa Zanni, presents her latest research and shares some discoveries about Botticelli’s techniques. Co-presented with the Power Institute. Event details When: 6pm, Tuesday 13 March Where: Foyer, New Law Building, Camperdown Campus Cost: free, no booking required For more information please visit the Sydney Ideas website.

Chinese exceptionalism in international relations
|
 |
 |
Examine the manifestations and sources of contemporary Chinese ‘exceptionalism’, and its implications for foreign policy.
Examine the manifestations and sources of contemporary Chinese ‘exceptionalism’, and its implications for foreign policy.
Chinese exceptionalism is defined by great power reformism, benevolent pacifism, and harmonious ‘inclusionism’. While resting on an important factual basis, it is constructed by mixing facts with myths through selective use of China’s vast historical and cultural experiences. Exceptionalism does not determine policy – but as an essential part of the world view of the Chinese government and many intellectuals – it can be a source for policy ideas. Presented by the China Studies Centre, with Dr Feng Zhang, Politics and International Studies, Murdoch University. Event detailsWhen: 6pm, Tuesday 14 March Where: Lecture Theatre 104, New Law Building, Camperdown Campus Cost: free, no booking required For more information visit the Sydney Ideas website.

Over 3000 students participated in the 2011 Student Communications Survey – see the winner and key findings.
Last year we asked you about what info you want the Uni to provide, and how you want that information delivered. This is what you told us:
- Most useful sources of study and student life info: Uni websites, emails and letters
- Preferred sources: email and your LMS/Blackboard
- Most requested new source: a mobile app, featuring your timetable, a room and building finder, important dates, maps, and library access
- Where you would like us to be more active: YouTube
- Managing the admin side of your study: overall you were satisfied with the adminstative aspects of dealing with the Uni, but your expectations were low!
So, what happens next? We've reported these findings to the relevant areas of the University and they're incorporating your feedback into current projects, including a mobile app and a comprehensive new online student administration system. We've also migrated a significant amount of video content to our YouTube channel, and have started a project to produce helpful 'how to' and 'where is' clips, as well as some fun stuff about student life. So, who won?We asked you to tell us in 25 words or less what you considered to be the most important improvement, addition or innovation that we could make to student communications. Congratulations to Hayley Nicholls, who answered: A Sydney Uni App, particularly one with maps and room finding abilities would make such a difference! The next student communications survey will be at the end of this semester, so keep an eye out for your chance to have your say and win!
