19 MAR | The death and life of Pop Art in 1960s counter-culture Thomas Crow, Professor of Modern Art at the Institute of Fine Arts in New York and author of seminal texts on post-war American art, will examine how the international counter-culture kept ‘pop’ current but in the process surpassed, dispersed, and ultimately obscured the sources. 19 MAR | China under Xi Jinping: after who, what? Professor Bo Zhiyue, a leading scholar on China's elite politics and visiting professor at the University's China Studies Centre, will discuss the new leadership of Xi Jinping and the policies this new leadership is likely to adopt for China's political, economic, and social development in the next five to ten years. 20 MAR | The social sciences and climate change: structuring the sources of distrust Professor Andy Hoffman from the University of Michigan argues that the physical sciences present information that is focused on quantitative and rational treatments, so a broad array of social sciences is needed to address issues related to how the problem is accepted by the public. 22 MAR | The deep structure of the arts Ellen Dissanayake from the University of Washington identifies aspects of the ‘deep structure’ of the arts in her work – the underlying principles of our nature that influence the making of art and our responses to the works of others.
