| FEBRUARY 2012 |
| A huge year ahead for the CRN |
 |
Welcome back everyone. 2012 will be a very big year for cancer research at Sydney, and for the Cancer Research Network.
First, we look forward to our 2012 Sydney Cancer Conference, to be held on 27-28th September. The international keynote speakers have been secured and the rest of the program is shaping up to be an exciting and interesting mix exploring the theme 'From Discovery to Implementation'. For the first time CRN members will be offered discounted registration during the early bird period.
2012 also brings a reformed governance model for the Network. A new CRN Council will directly advise the University on cancer research strategy, development and investment, supported by the Network Chair and a new Management Committee. You will be receiving an email with further details about the governance model shortly.
Nearly half the Council members will be elected by you, the Network. In order for the CRN database to support these elections, we have cleaned and rebuilt it. We now ask that you re-register with the CRN to populate it with fresh data. You will receive direct reminders to do this – thank you for your patience in this important task. Please also promote membership to your colleagues: our influence as a community of researchers depends on a strong, visible and active CRN membership.
In this Newsletter we announce the outcome of the 2011 USCRF Research Infrastructure Grants, a new scheme devised by the CRN that attracted many high quality applications. Warm congratulations to the recipients.
Might your research be enhanced by access to health linkage data? Remember that CRN funds a University subscription to CHeReL, the Centre for Health Record Linkage, giving our researchers discounted access to health linkage data.
CRN was established to foster collaboration and communication between cancer researchers, and to raise your profile in the University. Please get involved with the Network in 2012. Let us know about your successes, join or establish a Special Interest Group (SIG), inform the rest of us about your upcoming events. Let us know what you need from the Network.
Good luck in all of your research and other endeavours throughout 2012.

Joining and re-joining the Network
|
 |
In preparing for the new CRN governance structure it became apparent that the membership database needed an overhaul. It is critical that the Network has accurate information on its members, including their cancer research discipline and the Faculty or Institute in which they work. So we are biting the bullet to ask that all current CRN members re-register using the simplified webform which directly populates the database in a structured way. The benefits of being a CRN Member include:
- Information about the latest research, funding opportunities, upcoming events, other researchers, and collaboration opportunities;
- Discounted registration to the Sydney Cancer Conference 2012;
- Eligibility for University cancer grants;
- Support to set up a Special Interest Group;
and more...
Most importantly, our Network membership data tells the University who and how many we are as a community of researchers, and which Faculties and disciplines are engaged in the fight against cancer.
Please also use this opportunity to encourage your colleagues to join through your local newsletters or group emails. Our aim is to have every University of Sydney-affiliated cancer researcher registered as a member of the Network. We will announce the latest membership statistics when the Council election is launched at the end of March.

Working Groups
|
 |
CRN has a Postgraduate Student Working Group. These students meet to
- facilitate student interests through the identification of issues and activities of importance to postgraduate and Honours students doing research on cancer;
- identify networking, mentoring and collaborative opportunities, and training and resources, that will help prepare students from a variety of disciplines for careers related to cancer; and
- contribute to the activities of the Cancer Research Network with special emphasis on representing the interests of student members of the Network and promoting research degrees in cancer among students.
Currently we have approximately 100 postgraduate students on the CRN database. We would encourage you to join the Network or support your students to join. To join the CRN PGSWG please email nadine.caisley@sydney.edu.au
