| BREAST CANCER SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP |
New to the CRN
The recently formed Breast Cancer Special Interest Group (BCSIG) brings together a critical mass of multi-disciplinary cancer researchers who collaborate to address important issues in breast cancer. The group, led by Professor Patrick Brennan, is committed to promoting knowledge generation and translation in the scientific and broader community, and to developing future world-leading researchers.
At present there are over 50 academic and student members with backgrounds from physiotherapy, oncology, diagnostic testing and imaging, surgery, biology, clinical exercise physiology, evidence synthesis, public health and psychology. We hope to expand the group further, so let us know if you would like to join.
The BCSIG will be holding its first seminar on 21 November 2012, 4.00-6.00pm in Lecture Theatre 106 in the New Law Building, The University of Sydney. There will be keynote speakers from the broad themes of the BCSIG: imaging and detection, treatment and rehabilitation, biology and genetics, and epidemiology and public health. There will also be opportunities for multidisciplinary dialogue followed by a light supper. Further information to follow.
If you are a breast cancer researcher and would like to be part of this group or are interested in attending the seminar, please email Kriscia Tapia (kriscia.tapia@sydney.edu.au).

Dr Beata Ujvari is a postdoctoral research fellow with the Australasian Wildlife Genomics Group, Faculty of Veterinary Science. She received a PhD from the Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary and a MSc from the Agriculture University, Godollo, Hungary. Her research interest covers the broad topic of evolutionary ecology. Dr Ujvari has over fifty published peer-reviewed papers and two book chapters, and is currently the Chair of the CRN Comparative Oncology Special Interest Group. Her current research is focusing on understanding the progression and evolution of the Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumour Disease, a clonally transmissible cancer, which threatens the Tasmanian devils with extinction. Dr Ujvari uses her evolutionary biology background to understand how the genetic and epigenetic plasticity of DFTD contributes to the exceptional success of this parasitic cancer. Dr Ujvari also hopes that her research will provide important information for traditional cancers that arise and die with their hosts. |
