| AUGUST 2012 |
| Dear CRN members, |
 |
It’s been a busy year for cancer researchers at the University of Sydney, and the pace is set to continue for the remainder of 2012.
Applications for the inaugural Cancer Research Network Postgraduate Student ConferenceTravel Grants have just closed. We received 36 high quality applications which are currently being reviewed. Thanks to everyone who applied.
Earlier this month we held the Postgraduate Student Quiz Night at Hermann’s Bar. Over thirty postgraduate students from across many faculties participated in a fun night. Ned Charles, from the Faculty of Health Sciences, won the lucky door prize of a ticket to the upcoming Sydney Cancer Conference 2012. It was great to meet some new students just starting their Masters and PhD journeys.
Recently, the Health Data Linkage Special Group held a Breakfast Meeting and heard the latest news from the Centre for Health Record Linkage, about health data linkage for research from an ethics committee perspective, and an interesting study exploring pregnancy-associated cancer. This group continues to grow as more researchers across the University use health record linkage in their work. It was fantastic to see some new faces at the breakfast.
Please read on to find out what Network activities we’ve got planned for the rest of the year, current funding opportunities, the latest cancer news, and upcoming conferences.
Best wishes, The Cancer Research Network Team |

A promising step forward in prostate cancer treatment
|
 |
When treating prostate cancer with radiotherapy, knowing the prostate cancer position is critical to accurately targeting the radiation beam to avoid missing the tumour and irradiating healthy tissue. Prostate cancer patients being treated with radiotherapy can now have their prostate position known to within 0.5mm during radiation treatment thanks to a study led by Professor Paul Keall, NHMRC Australia Fellow at the University of Sydney. Professor Keall will be presenting at the upcoming Sydney Cancer Conference.
