Dr Adele Haythornwaite

Alumna of the School of Biological Sciences, Dr Adele Haythornwaite, should already be a familiar face to most. But for those who are un-familiar, it is with great pleasure that we re-welcome Adele into her new role as research assistant with Professor Mats Olsson. “I'm delighted to be asked to join the Olsson lab, and to be back in SoBS,” said Adele.Alumna of the School of Biological Sciences, Dr Adele Haythornwaite, should already be a familiar face to most. But for those who are un-familiar, it is with great pleasure that we re-welcome Adele into her new role as research assistant with Professor Mats Olsson. “I'm delighted to be asked to join the Olsson lab, and to be back in SoBS,” said Adele. “I have really enjoyed catching up with many friends and former colleagues.” Adele completed her bachelor’s degree at Reading University in the UK and then moved to Australia to complete a PhD with Professor Chris Dickman. Her thesis, which she completed in 2005, looked at the foraging ecology of dasyurids in the Simpson Desert. “This was quite a busy time, as I had three kids while I was doing my PhD, which slows you down somewhat” said Adele. After her PhD, she worked in Professor Rick Shine’s group until the end of 2010. In addition to her research work, Adele is currently on the council of the Royal Zoological Society of NSW – an organisation which is holding a Grumpy Scientists forum at the Zoo this Saturday. | CELEBRATE BIOLOGY: 50TH BIRTHDAY SUCCESS |
Over 250 alumni, staff, students and their families attended the 50th birthday party of the School of Biological Sciences on Friday 19th October.Over 250 alumni, staff, students and their families attended the 50th birthday party of the School of Biological Sciences on Friday 19th October. The School celebrated with cake, ice-cream, drinks, a jumping castle and dancing as blue skies turned to a star-filled evening. Matt Falloon and his trained balloons proved a great hit with both children and adults alike. Squid, crocodiles, flowers and isopods appeared in his hands with a squeak and a twist – and a collective ‘wow’ of the crowd. The Macleay Museum exhibition, The Meaning of Life, received over 120 visitors during the evening. The exhibition clearly impressed, with many guests reliving their time in the School of Biological Sciences and exclaiming over photos of themselves or classmates and colleagues. The feedback from guests was overwhelmingly positive and we were able to re-connect with many alumni and former staff. Photos from the evening can be found in the gallery here. The success of this event is due largely to the hard work of staff and volunteers. Many thanks and congratulations to all involved!
