Dear alumni and friends
Welcome to another exciting year in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. I am particularly pleased to welcome recent alumni and new friends of the Faculty to this edition of Accord. Can I first of all thank all of you for your tremendous support over 2011 – one of the most successful years in quite some time for the Faculty in so many ways, including a record number of individual donors contributing to our vision. Thank you very much.
I am also pleased to announce that we have formed a partnership with the Sydney Writers’ Festival in 2012 – so look out for some exciting announcements about this soon.
It is always a pleasure to meet you in person and I hope you will be able to attend the Dean’s Reception on Wednesday March 28 at 6pm in the MacLaurin Hall. This not only gives you a chance to reconnect with your Faculty, but also to hear about our plans for the future and let me know what you think and how you can help us achieve them. I look forward to seeing you there!
Best wishes, Duncan Professor Duncan Ivison Dean | Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

The third showcase for fourth year Honours students in the Department of Government and International Relations will be held on Thursday 10 May at Parliament House on Macquarie Street in the State Theatrette. The third showcase for fourth year Honours students in the Department of Government and International Relations will be held on Thursday 10 May at Parliament House on Macquarie Street in the State Theatrette. Register online. Members of the Department’s External Advisory Committee were impressed by the Honours students they met, and interested in their thesis research. Honours students have often wished for wider audiences for their work, lest it die on the shelf. Putting those two thoughts together, the Committee hatched the idea of a showcase off campus to show the community a little of the high quality work students do. At the showcase four or five students speak briefly to their research and respond to questions. Their work ranges from the interstices of NSW politics, to lobbying in the United Nations, to mining deals in Africa, housing program in Australia, and more. In addition, the abstracts of all theses done in the previous year appear in the program for the event, so that the work of every student is made available. A reception follows the presentations to allow further, informal discussion. The reception is sponsored by The Sydney Morning Herald. The President of the Legislative Council is the Parliamentary sponsor. Watch the YouTube video about the Showcase of Government IV Honours theses work. For further information please contact Emeritus Professor Michael Jackson.

SYDNEY WRITERS' FESTIVAL We are thrilled with the way our sponsorship of Sydney Writers' Festival is shaping up, with the official program of events set to be announced on March 29th. In the meantime, the festival is seeking volunteers! If you fancy rubbing shoulders with authors and being involved in the festival this May, visit their website. Where possible we will try to have as many of our volunteers at co-sponsored events, so please mention your affiliation with the University in your application.
THANK YOU I am so grateful for the generosity of spirit that many alumni and friends demonstrated in 2011, since it makes a real difference to what we – researchers, teachers and students – can achieve, for the benefit of Australia and the world...
